ALBURY SLIP

The naturally Australian equivalent of the famous and no longer available ALBANY SLIP from the United States is now readily available in a form suitable for use by the ceramic industry.

Mined and processed entirely in Australia, this product enables the potter to formulate new exciting glazes from this time honoured source.

As with any natural occurring mineral, the deposit will vary as it is mined over time. Comprehensive testing should be done on any new batch of material introduced in the studio.

ALBANY SLIP __ ALBURY SLIP

Albany slip has long been the standard within the North American pottery community. It has proven invaluable for the production of non-crazing, earth tone glazes, and many potters use it in their glazes.

In about January of 1988 HAMILL & GILLESPIE, the company who distributes the product gave notice that Albany slip had run out.

Many companies and potters have been working on a substitute with limited success. A major problem is to get a representative analysis of Albany slip (I have seen 6 different analyses of it up to date!)

One company in Canada has used a material called Red Earth to substitute Albany slip. The whole process of this is outlined in I.M.C. (c) Case study #5 which is available from us.

There is not much point in this particular exercise for us in Australia as we have no access to Red Earth from Canada. It is interesting from an academic point however.

We are fortunate that we have located a large reliable deposit of sedimentary material that is uniform in its analysis and large enough to be commercially viable and that is extremely close to the chemical analysis of Albany Slip.

For your interest I enclose below the chemical breakdown of:

ALBANY SLIP - The original American material (averaged analysis)
ALBERTA SLIP - Canadian substitute and reconstituted material
ALBURY SLIP - The naturally occurring Australian material

As you will notice the chemical analyses of ALBANY SLIP and ALBURY SLIP are not exactly the same. I feel that while there are so many different ALBANY SLIP analyses around, it is difficult to sort out. The ALBURY SLIP behaves exactly like the original ALBANY SLIP, and is similar in content.

The other advantages are that it doesn’t need to be made up from 7 or 8 different materials like ALBERTA SLIP since it is a natural Australian mined material.
